Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey, originally built in 532-537 as a church, was the largest cathedral on Earth for nearly 1000 years. In 1453 the building was converted to a mosque, and along with it, all the Byzantine wonders within it were removed, including plastering over beautiful mosaics.
